Removal and replacement with an unused rubber shock boot to replace the dust shield and a glob of silicon sealant for the plug will gain you a little. My cousin has a 78 so I measured his and it was 50 inches. I also measured the 70 rear which is a 8.2, and it was like a 1 1/4 shorter than the 81 rear.
